Miniature circular silver medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head and shoulders portrait of King George VI facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIUS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP.’ (George VI by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India); the reverse with the ‘GRI’ cipher of King and Emperor George VI centrally within a laurel wreath, inscribed below on three ribbons ‘ROYAL VICTORIAN MEDAL’; diameter 18.5mm (0.72 inch); on original ribbon.

The Medal was instituted on 21 April 1896 to be awarded to those below the rank of officer for service to the sovereign and is in his or her personal gift.  It is most often given to members of the Royal Household, to those who are of service to the monarch during foreign tours and during state visits to heads of state and their personal entourage.

This example is from the reign of George VI before the change of wording to the face in 1948 following the independence of India.
