Circular gilt medal with eyelet for suspension; the face with the head of Ferdinand Philip Louis Charles Henry, Duke of Orleans, circumscribed ‘FERDINAND P L.C.H. DUC D’ORLEANS’, signed ‘C.T’; the reverse with a view of the Chapel Royal of Saint Ferdinand, Neuilly-sur-Seine, circumscribed above ‘CHAPELLE ST FERDINAND’, inscribed in the exergue ‘INAUGURÉE / LE 11 JUILL. 1843’; diameter 23.27mm (0.91 inch). Ferdinand Philip Louis Charles Henry, Duke of Orleans was born in Palermo on 3 September 1810, the eldest son of the future King Louis Philippe I and Queen Marie Amelie, Princess of Naples and Sicily. He moved to France in 1817 and was active as a soldier in the July Revolution of 1830 that brought his father to the throne of France, in the War of Belgian Independence in 1831 to 1832 and in Algeria. His personal courage and military success made him a popular figure. He died on 13 July 1842 following a road accident at Sablonville, Neuilly-sur-Seine. The Chapel Royal of Saint Ferdinand illustrated on the reverse of the medal was built near the spot in his memory. After his funeral service at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris he was interred in the Chapelle Royale at Dreux. An example is in the Collection of the American Numismatic Society (#0000.999.51012).
