Miniature cupro-nickel Greek cross with out-turned ends to the arms, with eyelet and ring for ribbon suspension; the face with a centrally-imposed four-pointed faceted star with a circular central medallion bearing a Zimbabwe bird within a ring inscribed ‘FOR BRAVERY’ with laurel leaves above; the reverse plain; diameter 19.44mm (0.76 inch); on correct ribbon. The Cross was instituted in October 1980 to replace the Silver Cross of Rhodesia and is Zimbabwe’s second-highest award for bravery. Versions exist for the Army, Air Force, Police, Prison Service and Civilians, each distinguished by the symbol on the suspension bar, absent in this example. The arms of the Silver Cross are usually enamelled in blue but there are no traces of this example ever having been enamelled.
