Circular bronze medal with grip and laterally-pierced loop for suspension; the face with the emblem of the Society of a phoenix (ho-o) above a Geneva (Greek) cross with pauwlonia and bamboo wreath; the reverse with characters ‘Meiji 37-8 Years War / Relief / Commemorative Medal / Japan Red Cross Society’; on replaced correct ribbon with hook and eye fitments.
The Medal was awarded soon after the 1904-5 war with Russia. It did not receive Imperial sanction and since it is rarely found in Japan was most likely awarded to foreigners who performed humanitarian work during that war or contributed to the Society to fund its efforts.
