Circular silvered metal medal with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face with the Basovizza (Bazoviska) Monument to the Fallen bearing the names ‘BIDOVEC’, ‘MILOS’, ‘MARUSIC’ and ‘VALENCIC’, inscribed above ‘XVIII SNOUB BASOVISKA’ (18th Slovenian National Liberation Strike Brigade ‘Basoviska’), inscribed ‘KOBARID 1.10.1943’ to the left and ‘TRST 35.1945’ to the right, a map below, the Miramare Castle to the right; the reverse with a central rectangular plaque on a stippled ground; on original ribbon on pentagonal hanger and with a five-pointed red enamelled star device.

The Brigade was formed at Kobarid (better known as Caporetto) in Slovenia on 1 October 1943 and fought fiercely against first Italian and later German forces on the Slovenian-Italian border.

Slovenians Ferdo Bidovec, Fran Marusic and Alojz Valencic together with Zvonimir Milos, a Croat with links to the Slovenian community in Trieste, attacked the editorial staff of the fascist newspaper ‘Il Popolo di Trieste’ resulting in one fatality and three woundings.  After a brief trial, the four were executed on 6 September 1930 in Basovizza.

In the early 1940s, the four ‘Heroes of Bazoviska’ became symbols of the Slovenian struggle against fascism.  The Basovizza (Bazoviska) Monument to the Fallen was erected in memory of the four and annually a ceremony of commemoration is held there by Slovenian and Italian authorities.
