Circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head and shoulders portrait of General of the Armies John J. Pershing facing left, inscribed’ JOHN J. PERSHING’ to the lower left, dated ‘1918 1923’ on an upright sword within a laurel wreath to the right, four five-pointed stars above; the reverse with an American eagle perched, a fortress in its talons, circumscribed ‘U • S • ARMY • OF • OCCUPATION • OF • GERMANY * * *’; on replaced correct ribbon mounted for wear. The medal was awarded for service in Germany or the territories of Austria-Hungary between 12 November 1918 and 11 July 1923 but was not instituted until 21 November 1941, less than three weeks before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that precipitated the United States into World War II. A good example.
