Circular silver medal with Hanoverian steel ring and clip suspension; the face with the head of King Wilhelm IV facing right, indistinctly initialled at the base of the neck; the reverse inscribed ‘FÜR / SECHSZEHN / JAHRIGE / TREUE / DIENSTE’ (for sixteen years’ loyal service), an arabesque below; deeply age-toned; on original age-faded ribbon. The medal was instituted on 2 March 1837 in gold and silver, the latter to be awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks for sixteen years’ active loyal service. The medal was replaced in 1841 with a new version bearing the head of King Ernst August following the death of King Wilhelm IV, by which time 1,670 examples of this medal had been awarded. The medal was designed by the Brunswick engraver Fritz and produced at the Royal Mint in Hanover. The medal is rarely found.
