Circular silver medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the crowned cipher of Prince Georg Wilhelm within an ornate laurel wreath; the reverse inscribed ‘FÜR MILITAIR VERDIENST’ above crossed cavalry sabres within an ornate laurel wreath; the suspension loop may have been replaced; on replaced correct ribbon lacking the swords that would have been present on the original. The medal was instituted on 30 May 1850 by Fürst Georg Wilhelm to be awarded for military merit during the disturbances of 1849. It was next awarded for the campaign against France of 1870-1871, this time with crossed cavalry sabres on the ribbon. It was again awarded during World War I, 1914-1918, this time with straight swords on the ribbon. Our assumption, because of the very low numbers of medals issued before 1914, is that this example is from the 1914-1918 issue but as it is lacking the swords on the ribbon it is impossible to be certain. The population of the small Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe was less than 50,000 at the time and the medal is thus relatively rare.
