Bronze Latin cross pattée with laurel wreath between the arms and with scroll and loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the head of King Friedrich August III facing left, circumscribed ‘FRIEDRICH AUGUST KÖNIG V. SACHSEN, the Saxon crown on the upper arm, the date ‘1915’ on the lower arm; the reverse with a circular central medallion bearing the crowned cipher of King Friedrich August III, the left and right arms inscribed ‘WELT-’ ‘KRIEG’ (World War) respectively; on replaced correct ribbon. The Cross was instituted by King Friedrich August III on 30 October 1915 ‘as recognition of outstanding patriotic activities during the current war’ (‘zur Anerkennung besonderer vaterländischer Betätigung während des gegenwärtigen Krieges’). It was awarded particularly for humanitarian work and especially to medical staff tending the sick and wounded. It was suppressed at the end of World War I in 1918. A very good example.
