Circular silver medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the laurel-crowned head of Emperor Franz-Joseph I facing right, circumscribed ‘FRANZ JOSEPH I KAISER VON OESTERREICH’ (Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria), signed ‘TAUTENHAYN’; the reverse inscribed ‘MEINEM TREUEN VOLKE VON TIROL’ (My loyal people of the Tyrol’ and dated ‘1866’ within a wreath of oak and laurel; on wartime ribbon (the original would have been two equal red and white stripes). The medal was instituted on 17 September 1866 and awarded to the forces that had opposed the incursions of the Italian irregular forces of Garibaldi into the southern Tyrol. A good example of a rare medal.
