Oval multi-coloured enamel badge with pinback suspension for wear; the face with the gilt Romanian eagle bearing the arms of Romania imposed on a blue enamel cross crosslet on a yellow ground within a red enamel border; the reverse inscribed ‘FRN’ and ‘LEI 27’ with makers mark of two overlapping ‘H’s; oxidisation stains to the reverse, all enamel intact. The Frontul Renaşterii Naţionale (Front of National Rebirth – FRN) was created in 1938 under the direction of King Carol II. It held power from 7 March 1939 until 22 June 1940 when it became the Party of the Nation and continued in power until 14 September 1940. Carol II had become King on 8 June 1930 and meddled increasingly in the politics of Romania. In 1938 he banned the Iron Guard (which he had previously supported), chose his own cabinet and changed the constitution, reserving power to himself. In 1939 and 1940 he was compelled first by Germany and then by the Soviet Union to cede territory and he was finally forced to abdicate in favour of his son Mihai (Michael) in 1940, though power lay in the hands of Marshal Ion Antonescu.
