Four-pointed silver-gilt star with faceted chiselled graduated rayed arms with laterally-pierced loop and silver-gilt and green enamel laurel wreath suspension, with what appears to be a hallmark on the inside of the suspension ring; the face with a silver-gilt and white edged blue enamel cross Moline decussate with an oval central medallion bearing a standing female figure within an oval blue enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘AL MERITO CIVIL’ (for Civil Merit), a crown imposed between the upper arms; the reverse plain; height including wreath suspension 24.28mm (0.96 inch); width 14.1mm (0.55 inch); some wear to gilding at the edges; on original ribbon. The Order was instituted by King Alphonso XIII on 25 June 1926 to be awarded for outstanding meritorious service in the civil sphere. It was abolished by the Republic in 1931 and re-instituted by Generalissimo Franco on 7 November 1942. A good older example.
