Miniature circular silver-gilt medal with two loops and papal arms suspension, being a papal triple tiara on crossed keys, the suspension ring with silver hallmark; the face with a dished circular central medallion bearing the head and shoulders portrait of Pope Pius XI facing right, circumscribed ‘PIUS • XI PONT • MAX’, all within a circular laurel wreath; the reverse with a dished circular central medallion inscribed ‘BENE MERENTI’ (well-deserving) within a circular laurel wreath; diameter 15.92mm (0.62 inch); on original trifold ribbon mounted for wear. The Benemerenti Medal was instituted by Pope Gregory XVI in 1832 to be awarded for long and exceptional service to the Church. This example is from the Papacy of Pope Pius XI, 1922 to 1939. A very good period miniature.
