Miniature square silver-gilt medal with the corners cut to create a cruciform, with two loops and papal arms suspension, being a papal triple tiara on crossed keys, the suspension ring with silver hallmark and maker’s mark ‘KS’; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the head and shoulders portrait of Pope Pius X facing right, circumscribed to the left ‘PIUS • X PONT • MAX’ and dated ‘1903 lower right; the reverse with a circular central medallion inscribed ‘BENE MERENTI’ (well-deserving); diameter 16.13mm (0.63 inch);on original trifold ribbon. The Benemerenti Medal was instituted by Pope Gregory XVI in 1832 to be awarded for long and exceptional service to the Church. A very good period miniature.
