Five-pointed gilt metal cross pattée with pointed ends to the arms, the space between the arms filled with green laurel leaves, on scroll suspension inscribed ‘GRAL CABANAS’; the face with a circular central gilt medallion bearing the head and shoulders full-face portrait of José Trinidad Cabañas, inscribed above ‘VALOR HEROICO’; the reverse plain with maker’s mark ‘N.S. MEYER, INC NEW YORK’; on original ribbon with top buckle mounted for wear; with a metal enamelled ribbon bar mounted for wear; in original fitted embossed case of issue by N. S. Meyer Inc. of New York. The award was instituted on 19 August 1955 and amended on 10 October 1969 and 26 August 1977 to be awarded for acts of bravery. José Trinidad Cabañas (1805-1871) fought in the independence war of the 1820s and was President of Honduras from 1852 to 1855 before being overthrown in a coup. He fled to El Salvador, serving in the government and as head of the National Congress. The award was made by the now-defunct firm of N.S. Meyer of New York. It is not often seen.
