Silver-edged red enamel Maltese cross on elaborate suspension in the form of an Austrian eagle bearing on its breast the arms of the Austrian Republic, encircled by the arms of the Austrian provinces in silvered and coloured enamels; the face with a Greek gilt-edged white enamel cross imposed; the reverse plain; hairline cracks on the upper and left arms (see illustrations); on a length of probably replaced but correct ribbon. The Order was instituted on 2 April 1952 and is Austria’s premier military and civilian award; it may also be awarded to non-Austrian citizens. Hard to find in senior classes.
