Large circular gilt medal with loop and ring for ribbon suspension; the face with the crowned eagle of Austria bearing the Austrian arms on its breast, encircled by a laurel wreath with the arms of the provinces of Austria imposed; the reverse inscribed ‘FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DIE REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH’ (For service to the Austrian Republic); on original trifold ribbon mounted for wear. The Award for Service to the Austrian Republic (Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich) was established on 2 April 1952 to reward those whose conspicuous accomplishments and distinguished service have brought public benefit to the Republic of Austria and is the highest Austrian decoration. It is made by Anton Reitterer of Vienna. A superb example.
