Gilt metal cross pattée with rays between the arms, on five-pointed faceted star suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the head of a lion within a ring inscribed ‘R D C’ (République Démocratique du Congo); the reverse plain; on original ribbon with glue residue to the upper reverse. The Medal was originally instituted in the late 1960s and amended in 1971, the country having been renamed Zaire. It was again amended in 1997 when the country reverted to being called the Democratic Republic of the Congo and this example is from after that date.
