Circular gilt metal medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a seated mother suckling a baby, a young girl holding a bunch of flowers to the left, a laurel branch below, a circular medallion bearing the head of Georgi Dimitrov (Prime Minister of Bulgaria and General Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party) above; the reverse with the socialist coat of arms of Bulgaria; some loss of gilding and age-oxidisation marks; on original ladies’ bow ribbon. The medal was instituted on 13 December 1950 to reward mothers who had raised four or more children (later, in 1966, reduced to three!). The medal was cancelled in 1991. An interesting piece of Stalinist history.
