Five-pointed rayed silvered star imposed on a smaller gilt five-pointed star; the face with a circular central gilt stippled medallion bearing a green peacock within a light green laurel wreath, the word ‘Independence’ below in Burmese characters; the reverse plain with the name of the Order in Burmese characters and mounted with pin for wear; diameter 60.36mm (2.37 inches); weight 44.58 grams (1.57 oz). The Order was instituted on 3 November 1953 in three grades and awarded to those, both military and civilian, who had fought for Burmese independence. The grade awarded depended on service in the periods 6 January to 26 July 1942 (invasion of Burma by Japanese and the so-called Burma Independence Army), 27 July 1942 to 26 March 1945 (Japanese occupation of Burma and an ‘independent’ Burma) and 27 March 1945 to 15 August 1945 (war against Japanese occupation forces). First class awards were made for service in all three periods, Second class for two and Third class for one. The Order is unusual in that it is hereditary and may be worn by the descendents of the original recipients. It has not been awarded since March 1962. We have concerns about the authenticity of this example for two reasons. First, it does not give the impression of having been made prior to 1962 but more recently. Second, it appears to be painted rather than enameled. Unfortunately, original examples with which to compare it are not readily available, nor is reliable information from Myanmar about the Order. We therefore offer it as most likely a collector’s copy.
