Circular gilt bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the full length figure of a helmeted soldier, his right arm raised, a rifle in his left hand, a female figure to his right, a male figure to his left, all imposed on a five-pointed star bearing a clock tower surmounted by a five-pointed star, radiant five pointed stars to either side, a laurel wreath below, the dates ‘1945 1985’ above; the reverse inscribed ‘40 лет победы в Великой Отечественной войне 1941-1945 гг’ (40 years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945), a hammer and sickle below above a ribbon, circumscribed above ‘УЧАСТНИКУ ВОЙНЫ’ (participant in war = combatant); on original ribbon and pentagonal hanger mounted for wear. The medal was instituted on 12 April 1985 and awarded to all surviving participants of the Great Patriotic War (World War II), one in a series of decenniel medals. An unusually good original example.
