Circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced ball for ribbon suspension; the face with the emblem of the United Nations, being a map of the world with gridlines within a laurel wreath, the letters ‘UN’ above; the reverse inscribed ‘IN THE SERVICE / OF PEACE’; on original ribbon, brooch mounted with pin for wear. The Medal is awarded for three months’ service in UNFICYP. The Mission began in March 1964 to keep the peace between Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. Since the Turkish invasion of 1974 and the division of the island, the Mission supervises the ceasefire and buffer zone. The Mission is on-going. A good older example.
