Massive circular gilt medal with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face with a helmeted soldier, a rifle in his right hand, leaping a wooden fence, a police star bearing the state coat of arms of the German Democratic Republic below, laurel leaves to either side, circumscribed ‘BESTENERMITTLUNGEN IN KORPERERTUCHTIGUNG UND SPORT’; the reverse inscribed ‘FÜR DEN SCHUTZ / DER ARBEITER UND / BAUERN MACHT’ (for the Defence of the Workers and Peasants Force) above a laurel sprig; diameter 50.45mm (1.98 inches), weight 58.82 grams (2.09 ounces); on original full neck ribbon; with a related rectangular lapel badge with a hand grasping a rifle on a red enamel field, mounted for wear. The Medal was instituted by the Ministry of the Interior in 1972 to be awarded at its martial arts competitions. The Medal was cancelled following German reunification in 1990.
