Circular gilt bronze medal with loop, scroll and ribbon suspension bar; the face with the Bowl of Hygieia, being a serpent entwining a chalice, within a laurel wreath, circumscribed ‘REPUBLICA SOCIALIST? ROMÂNIA’; the reverse inscribed ‘MEDALIA MERITUL SANITAR’ above a scroll; most of the gilding now absent; on original shortened discoloured frayed ribbon and hanger.
The medal was instituted in 1969 to be awarded to lower-ranking members of the medical profession. It was suppressed after the fall of the Communist regime.
The medal is not often found.
