Circular silver medal with swivel scroll suspension; the face with the crowned head and shoulders of King George V in field marshal’s uniform facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIUS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:’ (George V King of Great Britain and Emperor of India), signed ‘BM’ (for Sir Bertram Mackennal, 1863-1931); the reverse inscribed ‘FOR / LONG SERVICE / AND / GOOD CONDUCT’ above an arabesque; attributed on the edge to ‘S. COND. E. MCPOLAND, I.M.L.’; the reverse appears to have a had a label attached since a rectangular central area is somewhat less age-toned than the outer parts; on replaced correct post-1917 ribbon, glue residue to the reverse. The medal was instituted in 1830 and has undergone various changes in design and award criteria since that date. At the time this example was awarded, the requirement was 18 years’ exemplary service. Sub Conductor McPoland was a sergeant in the Simla Volunteer Rifles, regimental number 2222 and later, when presented with the Delhi Durbar Medal in 1911, was Assistant, Military Secretary Chief’s Branch. A good example.
