Circular gilt metal and red, white and blue enamel badge surmounted by a Tudor crown with loop for ribbon suspension to the reverse, a scroll at the base; the face with a circular central white enamel medallion bearing a gilt-edged red enamel Geneva cross, all within a gilt-edged deep blue enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY’, the scroll at the base inscribed in gilt letters ‘3 YEARS SERVICE’ on a deep blue enamel ground; the reverse plain, numbered ‘9216’, with maker’s mark of J.R. Gaunt of London; slight surface wear; on original ribbon with gilt top bar mounted for wear and with two blue enamel ‘3 YEARS SERVICE’ bars. The Badge was instituted in 1922 to be awarded to officers and members of the British Red Cross on completion of three years’ service. From 1931 onwards, a bar was awarded for each subsequent three years’ service up to a maximum of twelve years. The Badge was discontinued in 1955. A very good example.
