Four-pointed faceted bronze star with crown and loop suspension; the face with crossed swords and a circular oak wreath imposed, a ribbon centrally bearing the dates ‘1914-15’, the royal cipher ‘GV’ (for King George V) below; the reverse plain, with the attribution ‘G-1212 / PTE. A. BASSETT / R.W. KENT R.’; on probably replaced correct ribbon, a rust pinhole at the top of the reverse; with original named Record Office enclosure. The Star was instituted in 1918 and awarded to those who had served in any theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915 but had not already been awarded the 1914 Star. Private Albert Bassett from Penshurst in Kent served with 8th Battalion, Queens’ Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). He qualified for the Star in France on 30 September 1915. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 11 November 1915 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Also entitled to the British War Medal, 1914-1920 and the Inter-Allied Victory Medal. Sold with a copy of his Medal Index Card and his Commonwealth War Graves Commission entry.
