Gilt bronze cross pattée with concave ends to the arms, with a wreath of oak and laurel between the arms, on scroll and laterally-pierced loop suspension; the face with a circular central stippled medallion bearing the crowned cipher ‘FAR’ (Fredericus Augustus Rex) of King Friedrich August III within a deep blue enamel ring bearing six six-pointed stars; the reverse dated ‘1914’ and ‘1915’ above and below a horizontal line; on original ribbon.
The Cross was instituted on 31 March 1916 to reward volunteers working in medical and welfare roles in support of the armed forces during World War I.
Its design and award criteria were based on the award instituted by King Johann on 6 March 1871 following the Franco-German War of 1870 to 1871.
A good example.
