Circular gilt alloy medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head of King Albert facing right above a laurel branch within a ring circumscribed ‘ALBERT KOENIG VON SACHSEN ZUM 70. GEBURTSTAG’ (Albert King of Saxony 70th Birthday); the reverse with the mantled Arms of Saxony within a ring circumscribed ’25 JAHRE SEGENREICHER REGIERUNG’ (25 years of Beneficent Reign) and dated ‘1873-1898’; slight surface wear and age oxidisation marks; on possibly original ribbon. The medal was issued in 1898 to mark the 70th birthday of King Albert and also the silver jubilee of his reign. King Albert (1828-1902) ascended the throne in 1873 on the death of his father, having distinguished himself in a number of military campaigns. He was fortunate that his reign was a period of peace and prosperity and this and his benign rule made him a popular monarch. A good historical medal.
