Circular silvered medal with eyelet for suspension’ the face with the full-length figure of Peace, a dove above to either side, on a pedestal inscribed ‘PEACE / 1919’, a plinth below inscribed ‘AUSTRALIA’, a figure in chains below left and another in travail below right, signed ‘CDR’ lower left (for the great Australia sculptor Charles Douglas Richardson, 1853-1932), maker’s mark ‘AMOR LTD’ lower right(for Amor Pty Ltd. of New South Wales); the reverse inscribed ‘THE TRIUMPH OF LIBERTY AND JUSTICE’ centrally within a laurel wreath supported by the full-length figures of an Australian sailor (left) and soldier (right),a radiant Tudor crown above , circumscribed ‘VICTORY’ at the top, a ribbon below inscribed ‘THE PEACE OF / 1919’, signed ‘CDR’ lower right; with original ribbon.
The Medal was commissioned by the Department of Defence to mark the end of World War I and distributed in July 1919 to all children of the Commonwealth of Australia aged 14 years and less and additionally to children aged 14 to 16 years with a parent in the armed forces of Australia.
The Medal was manufactured by six different makers. This example is by Amor of New South Wales.
