Circular aluminium-bronze alloy medal with scrolled loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a chrysanthemum crest above a view of the Main Gate Bridge, popularly known as the Nijubashi, or Double, Bridge, at the entrance to the Inner Grounds of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo; the reverse inscribed with characters meaning ‘260tth National Anniversary Commemorative Medal, Shōwa 15th Year’; on original ribbon and fixtures; in original pasteboard fitted embossed case of issue. The medal was instituted by Imperial Edict on 27 July 1940 to be awarded to those involved in organising, conducting or participating in the celebrations in November 1940 of the 2600th anniversary of the founding of the Japanese Empire by the legendary Jimmu Tennō in the year 600 BC. The medal, ribbon and case are all in superb condition. An interesting historic medal.
