Knight Bachelor’s Badge, silver-gilt and enamel, hallmarks for London 1926

Large and impressive oval silver-gilt breast badge of multi-part construction; the face with a red enamel ground with silver-gilt upright cross-hilted sword, belted and sheathed, spurs to either side, rowels upwards, all within the sword belt, within a scrolled border; the reverse plain with pin for wear, maker’s mark ‘JKJ’ and silver hallmarks for London 1926; height 63.64mm (2.5 inches), width 46.7mm (1.84 inches). The Badge was instituted on 21 April 1926 by King George V in response to a request from the Imperial Society of Knights Bachelor for a badge to denote their rank. The first badges ranged in height from 74mm to 80mm and in 1933 the Royal Mint introduced a smaller second version. This superb example has hallmarks for 1926 but is only 63.64mm in height. On balance, we believe it is more likely that the hallmarks correctly date the piece and it is smaller than other contemporary examples than that a post-1933 example has been given earlier hallmarks, though we cannot be certain.
