Circular silvered bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a trophy of arms, including a breastplate, a visored helmet, a drum, two piles of cannonballs, two swords and six standards; the reverse inscribed ‘MILITÄR VETERANEN-VEREIN RESCHITZA GEGRÜNDET 3.JUNI 1883’ within a wreath of oak and laurel; silvering worn; on a replaced ribbon in the Imperial Austrian colours. The town of Reschitza (today Reşiţa) was founded in 1772 in the Banat region, then an Austrian Crown territory. At the time this medal was issued, Reschitza was the largest industrial town in south-east Europe and over two-thirds of the population were of German descent. Under the Treaty of Trianon at the end of World War I, the eastern Banat, including Reschitza, became part of Romania. An interesting piece of lost Balkan history.
