Circular gilt bronze medal on laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head of King Willem III facing right within a ring inscribed ‘WILLEM III KONING DER NEDERLANDEN G.H.V.L. (Willem III King of the Netherlands, Grand Duke of Luxembourg), a five-pointed star at the base; the reverse inscribed ‘ATJEH / 1873 EN 1874’ within a wreath of oak and laurel; on replaced correct ribbon (the ribbon was originally orange but was changed to dark blue by the Royal Decree of 24 April 1875). The Medal was instituted by King Willem III on 12May 1874 to be awarded to military participating in the First and Second Aceh Expeditions of 1873 and 1874 against Sultan Mahmud Syah. The Medal was made from the bronze of cannons captured from the Kraton (Palace) of Mahmud Syah.
