Nickel silver cross pattée with angled points and concave ends to the arms, with oak wreath between the arms, on laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head of King Willem III facing left encircled by a garter inscribed ‘VOOR KRIJGSVERRIGTINGEN’ (For War Actions), each arm of the cross with the initial ‘W’; the reverse plain; on possibly replaced ribbon with nickel silver ‘Atjeh 1896-1900’ and ‘Kleine Soenda-Eilanden 1909’ bars. The Cross was instituted on 19 February 1869 to be awarded to participants in major campaigns. The ‘Atjeh 1896-1900’ bar was instituted on 22 January 1901 and awarded for service in Atjeh between 29 March 1896 and 31 December 1900. The ‘Kleine Soenda-Eilanden 1909’ bar was instituted on 19 May 1911 and awarded for service on Bali between 14 September and 27 October 1906 and between 27 April and 2 May 1908, on Timor from 30 August 1905 to 1 March 1908 on Soemba from 10 March 1906 to 15 December 1909 and from 17 February to 14 April 1908 and on Flores from 1 March 1908 to 1 October 1909. A very fine example.
