Circular silver medal with loop and rectangular silver suspension bar engraved ‘PIONEERS’ within line and wavy borders, two loops at the base linked to crossed silver axes; the face with a phoenix, a ribbon below engraved with the attribution ‘SERGT. THOS. TUCKER’; the reverse engraved ‘PRESENTED / by the /PHOENIX ORPHANAGE / PIONEERS / to / Sergt. Thos. Tucker / APRIL 20. 1895’, decorative scrolling to the ground, maker’s mark of John James Durrant & Son, silver hallmarks for London 1894; height overall 92mm (3.62 inches). The Phoenix Orphanage was established in 1895 in premises at Stanley Road. Carshalton-on-the-Hill, Surrey and closed in 1920 when the District Council converted the building into flats. There is some inconclusive evidence that the Orphanage was instituted and supported by the Pride of Bermondsey Lodge. The firm of John James Durrant was founded in about 1860 and had premises at 30 Cheapside in the City of London. Durrant was later joined in partnership by his son, William James Durrant and the business occupied premises at 40 and 126 Cheapside. Durrant senior died on 10 January 1905 aged 80 years and his son continued the business at 40 Cheapside. An unusual piece.
