Five-pointed white enamel star imposed on a ten pointed rayed star with crown suspension; the face with a central circular silver medallion with blue enamel Arabic inscription which may be translated as ‘What benefits Egypt owes to the Nile, her source of prosperity and happiness’ within a beaded border; the reverse signed ‘LATTES’ and hallmarked; on original ribbon with rosette denoting an award of the ‘officer’ class. With an identical miniature, also signed ‘LATTES’ on the reverse, with shorter inscription; lacking ribbon. Both in excellent overall condition with all enamel intact; in original fitted case of issue signed ‘J.LATTES, FOURNISSEUR DE S.M. Le ROI D’EGYPTE & DE L’ÉTAT, LE CAIRE’ (J.Lattes, supplier to H.M. The King of Egypt and to the State, Cairo), in very good order with slight scuff marks and two small scratches. The exterior and interior of the case indicate this example probably dates from the 1930s or early 1940s. (Early examples of the order are made by 'A.Lattes'; and late royal examples by 'Maison Lattes, J. Weinber & Co.' with an Arabic inscription to the interior of the case. The presence of the words ‘& DE L’ÉTAT’ suggest this example is towards the end of the ‘J. Lattes’ period). The romantically named Order of the Nile was established in 1915 by Sultan Husayn Kamil to reward persons, military or civilian, who had rendered useful service to Egypt. Unlike most pre-1952 royal awards, the Order of the Nile was continued after the Revolution, though without the crown.
