Silver-edged white enamel cross with silver-edged red enamel inset panels, the suspension ring hallmarked and with maker’s mark; the face with a central circular white enamel medallion bearing a red enamel Greek (Geneva) encircled by a red enamel ring bearing the inscription in gilt letters ‘PATRIAE AC HUMANITATI’ (Fatherland and Humanity), a green and red enamel wreath imposed indicating a wartime award; the reverse with a central circular white enamel medallion bearing the dates in silver ‘1864’ and ‘1914’; on correct but possibly replaced ribbon; in original fitted embossed case of issue by A. Bachruch with the royal Hungarian arms in gilt on the inside of the lid; slight lack of white enamel to the upper edge of the central medallion of the face, which may be from the time of manufacture, old repairs to the lower arm of the face below the wreath and a small loss of enamel to tip of the same arm, the upper inner arms of the left and right arms of the reverse and the left of the upper arm of the reverse with old repairs, a small chip to the lower left of the lower arm of the reverse, the catch of the case no longer engaging. The Austrian Red Cross was founded in 1864 and the merit awards were created to mark the 50th anniversary. This cross was awarded from 1914 to 1919 for aiding the wounded and displaced during World War I. A good quality example, unusually from Hungary.
