Gilt bronze and white enamel cross pattée alisée with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing a gilt-edged red enamel Geneva cross within a ring inscribed ‘BAYR – LANDESVEREIN VOM ROTEN KREUZ’ (Bavarian State Association of the Red Cross); the reverse with a circular central medallion inscribed ‘IN DANKBARKEIT DAS ROTE KREUZ’ (In Gratitude The Red Cross) above an eight-pointed gilt star; diameter 46.8mm (1.84 inches); three tips of the reverse with slight loss of enamel; on original aged ribbon. The Cross was instituted in two classes in 1923, the first class being a breast badge with pin for wear, the second class, as in this example, being suspended from a ribbon. The decoration is rare.
