Stamped bronze insignia in the form of the 75mm French Field Gun with scroll below, with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the figure ‘75’ below the cannon, the scroll at the base inscribed ‘NOTRE PORTE BONHEUR’; the reverse plain; diameter 21.67mm (0.85 inch); on original ribbon in the French national colours. The French 75mm field gun, introduced in 1897, was very advanced for its time, firing a self-contained shell with smokeless powder and having hydro-pneumatic recoil, meaning that the gun did not move each time it was fired, enabling a rate of fire of fifteen rounds per minute. The sale of such insignia raised significant sums for worthy causes throughout World War I.
