Circular gilt metal medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a centrally imposed equilateral triangle inscribed in Arabic letters and numerals ‘6 tišrīnu-l-awwal’ (6 October), the circular medal with concentric red, gilt and black circles, three stars on the gilt circle on each side, following the pattern of the Iraqi flag, the date ‘١٩٧٣’ (1973) below; the reverse plain; on replaced correct ribbon. The medal was awarded to those Iraqi forces that had participated in the 1973 war with Israel. The Yom Kippur or Ramadan War took place from 6 to 26 October 1973. Iraq contributed a force of 30,000 men and 500 tanks to the Golan Heights front. After initial successes by Egyptian and Syrian forces, the tide turned and Israel held the upper hand. However, Arab forces had made a significantly better showing than in 1967 and it may be argued that the war paradoxically paved the way to a more stable situation in the region.
