Circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head and shoulders portrait of Prince Johann II looking right and wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, circumscribed ‘JOHANN FÜRST VON LIECHTENSTEIN 1908’ (Johann Prince of Liechtenstein 1908), signed ‘L. HUJER’ (for Ludwig Hujer, 1872-1968); the reverse with oak trees framing the inscription ‘ZUM 50 JÄHRIGEN REGIERUNGS JUBILÄUM’ (for 50 years reign jubilee); on possibly original trifold ribbon. The medal was instituted on 12 November 1908 by Prince Johann II to mark his 50 years’ reign and awarded to his past and current staff and those who had loyally served or made a notable contribution to the Principality during his reign. Prince Johann II (1840-1929), son of Prince Alois II, reigned from 1858 until his death (in European history only the reign of Louis XIV is longer). He made significant social, economic and constitutional reforms and added many works of art to the Princely collections. He remained unmarried and was succeeded by his brother. The medal is not commonly found.
