Nine-pointed gilt-edged white enamel star, a central gilt line impose on each arm, with five gilt rays between each arm, each with bifurcated finial, a five-pointed, gilt-edged star imposed between each arm, each bearing a five-pointed gilt star, on swivel crown suspension; the face with a circular central gilt medallion bearing the intertwined initials ‘MA’ (for Maria) within a deep blue enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘PADROEIRA DO REINO’ (Patroness of the Kingdom) encircled by a gilt decorated ring; the reverse plain with maker’s backplate of J. The Order was founded by King João VI of Portugal and of Brazil on 6 February 1818 and instituted on 10 September 1819 as the Ordem Militar de Nossa Senhora de Conceição de Vila Viçosa (Military Order of Our Lady of the Conception of Vila Viçosa) to be awarded for loyal service to the Crown. The town of Vila Viçosa had an association with the ruling family for more than three hundred years and Saint Mary is patron saint of Portugal. The Order was suppressed by the Republican government on 15 October 1910. A very good example.
