Gilt-edged white enamel Greek cross on swivel crown suspension; the face with an imposed crowned circular central medallion in red, white and blue enamel and gilt metal bearing an escutcheon quarterly of Castile and Léon with Granada overall, a stylised wing to either side; the reverse with an imposed gilt-edged circular central medallion in red enamel with the intertwined gilt letters ‘MA’ (for Mérito Aeronáutico); on original ribbon mounted for wear. The Cross was instituted in 1949 to reward contributions to Spanish aviation and may be awarded to both military and civilians, and to both Spanish and foreign citizens. This example is of recent manufacture and in mint condition.
