Miniature circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the crowned figure of a king to the left, broken chains on his right arm, his left arm embracing a man whose forehead he is kissing, the dates ‘1940 1945’ above, an escutcheon bearing the lion of Ghent and a sprig of laurel below; the reverse inscribed ‘GANDAVUM / CIVES MAGNÆ / VIRTUTIS COLIT’ (Great Citizens of Ghent Cultivate Virtue) above a laurel branch; diameter 14.32mm (0.56 inch); on original ribbon in the colours of Ghent. The Medal was instituted by the City of Ghent in 1945 to honour those of its citizens who had been active in wartime resistance to German occupation. A full-size example awarded to Roger Leon François is in the collection of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. (accession # 2005.25.5). The Medal is rare, especially in miniature.
