Miniature circular silvered medal on scroll and ribbon bar suspension; the face with a maple leaf centrally within a laurel wreath; the reverse with the crowned cipher of Queen Elizabeth II circumscribed ‘SPECIAL SERVICE SPÉCIAL’; diameter 19.21mm (0.76 inch); on original ribbon with slip-on PEACE-PAIX clasp.
The medal was instituted on 16 June 1984 to be awarded to members of the Canadian armed forces for ‘service under exceptional circumstances in a specifically defined location for an established period of time, but need not be in a theatre of active operations’. The Medal is always issued with a clasp which specifies the special service recognised by the award of the Medal.
The Peace-Paix clasp was authorised on 26 November 1992 and was awarded for 180 days of honourable active service in peacekeeping operations ranging from Korea, Rhodesia and Yugoslavia to Cambodia and Haiti.
