Miniature circular bronze medal with worn eyelet for suspension; the face with the head of Marianne, representative of the French Republic, wearing a Phrygian bonnet and facing left, circumscribed ‘RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’, signed ‘VIEUXMAIRE’ (for Louis Henri Vieuxmaire engraver and medallist fl. ca. 1850-1900); the reverse inscribed with the names of those in the government ‘E. ARAGO / CREMIEUX / J. FAVRE / J. FERRY / GAMBETTA / GARNIER - PAGES / GLAIS - BIZION / E. PELLETAN / E. PICARD / ROCHEFORT / J. SIMON’, a five-pointed star at the base, circumscribed ‘GOUVt. PROVISOIRE PROCLAME LE 4 SEPTbre 1870’; diameter 23.4mm (0.92 inch); without ribbon. The Medal was issued to mark the declaration of the Third Republic following France’s defeat by Prussia, the capture of Emperor Napoleon III and the consequent fall of the Second Empire.
