Miniature circular copper-gilt medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a representation of the Bavarian Dienstauszeichnungskreuz (Service Cross), being a cross pattée with concave ends to the arms with a central scalloped escutcheon bearing the lozenges of the Bavarian arms within an oak wreath, the inscription ‘TREUE DIENST RESERVE LANDWEHR’ (Loyal Service Reserve Territorial Army) between the arms; the reverse inscribed ‘LANDWEHR / DIENST / AUSZEICHNUNG/ II KLASSE’ (Territorial Army Service Award, 2nd Class) within a circular oak wreath; gilding now largely absent; diameter 16.09mm (0.63 inch); without ribbon. The Medal was instituted by Prince Regent Ludwig on 30 August 1913 to replace the buckle (Bandschnalle) form award in use since 1876 and was awarded for participation or mobilisation in a campaign or at least three months’ active service.
