Miniature silver cross pattée with scalloped ends to the arms with a ball-tipped finial centrally, the arms ribbed, on laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with a central escutcheon bearing the arms of Bavaria in blue and white enamel within a green enamel laurel wreath; the reverse with a blue enamel escutcheon bearing the inscription ‘XL / DIENST. / JAHRE’ in silver letters within a green enamel laurel wreath; diameter 19.73mm (0.78 inch); on original parade-mounted ribbon with glue residue to the upper reverse. The Cross was instituted on 3 March 1865 by King Ludwig II following his meeting with veterans on 11 February of that year at which it was pointed out that Bavarian veteran officers had no service award. The Cross was suppressed in 1918 at the end of World War I. A superb miniature, rarely found.
