Miniature four-pointed faceted gilt bronze star with crown and loop suspension; the face with crossed swords and a circular oak wreath imposed, a ribbon centrally bearing the date ‘1914’, ribbons above and below inscribed ‘AUG’ and ‘NOV’ respectively, the royal cipher ‘GV’ (for King George V) below; the reverse plain; diameter 23.22mm (0.91 inch); on original shortened ribbon. The Star was instituted in 1917 and awarded to those who had served in France and Belgium between 5 August and 22 November 1914. Most of the recipients were members of the pre-war regular British Army.
